Pancevo, April 8th.1999.
The book that you have in front of you was created in 1998 and the stories gathered in this volume reflect my musings at the time... The crisis in Serbia was still part of my everyday reality, but at the same time I was trying to find more adventurous perspectives by exploring my dream life and by travelling to unexplored dimensions inside myself... At the time when I write this Preface, my reality became more warped and distorted than my imagination. My country and my town were exposed to NATO bombings, and it lasts more than two weeks now... It seems so phantasmagorical that this part of Europe will be so much under the cloud of war and bombings and all sort of violence during the end of the 20th century...
One of the more ironical details that you will find in this book is on the second page of the "Introduction" story. I received the mock-up version of Psychonaut #3 few days ago, while the NATO raids were already started. I haven't looked at the material ever since I finished it, and only now I remembered that when I drew the guy walking down the streets of Sarajevo, I spilled a drop of ink, incidentally, on what is supposed to be his T-shirt. Instead of erasing it, I thought it would be symbolical if I made a "target" sign out of it, visible on his shirt. While I was drawing this, I wasn't able to imagine that, one year later, the target sign will be a symbol of Belgrade under the NATO raids; now it was our turn, it seems, to be exposed to the bombs, and this March and April I can see a lot of people here wearing the T-shirts designed in a way that I prophetically (ha ha) presented in this strip.
By the time I write this I can't imagine how long this will war last, and what more will we have to live through the upcoming period. But anyway I hope that we will live to see the Balkans and our world in general as place where no bombs will be dropped on somebody's head...
