RE: PSYCHONAUT #3: Comics from Serbia by Alexsandar Zograf

"Aleksandar Zograf's comics give you a glimpse of life in Serbia and remind us that not all Serbians support the military actions of their government any more than all Americans support the actions of their government" -- Jonathan Richman, musician, There's Something About Mary

As events in and around the former Yugoslavia continue to dominate the headlines, MonsterPants Comics is pleased to give comics readers a rare look into the mind of one of Serbia's most talented cartoonists, Aleksandar Zograf. PSYCHONAUT #3 features the dreams and visions of this talented artist as well as an insider's view of the situation in Kosovo as it developed.

Underground and independent comics fans are familiar with Zograf's work, such as his classic LIFE UNDER SANCTIONS from Fantagraphics Books and DREAM WATCHER from Slab-O-Concrete. While the main theme of his stories is often recounting of dreams and "Hypnagogic visions" (as in his various mini comics and The Flock of Dreamers anthology also featuring R. Crumb), circumstances in his country have made his comics less dream journals and more war reports.

During the NATO bombings, Zograf (or Sasa Rakezic, his real name), kept the world informed by daily emailings to friends and members of the independent comics community. His messages supplied the outside world with reports and information that they couldn't get from CNN. These Reports from Serbia have been posted and reprinted on various comic book websites and news outlets, along with accompanying cartoon strips.

PSYCHONAUT #3 presents Zograf's life and dreams from a time before the bombs started to fall, presenting this talented artist as dreamer and cartoonist rather than a mere war correspondent. But the specter of conflict, both past and future, loom over him. This is never more evident than in his dark opening prologue strip and the book's text introduction written as the NATO bombing continued near his home outside of Belgrade.

In addition to the Zograf material in PSYCHONAUT #3 is a five page back-up story with a full-color flip cover featuring the characters from Freight Films' latest project, The Pursuers. The comic, written by screenwriter James Felix McKenney with art by Mark Reusch is based on situations from this tongue-in-cheek adventure movie filming in Brazil this summer. The Pursuers features a diverse and talented cast including Beto Simas, Diana Lee Inosanto and John Anthony Blake as well as Adam West and Frank Gorshin in their first appearance together since 1966's Batman!

Published in conjunction with Freight Films, the 32-page PSYCHONAUT #3 is available now from MonsterPants Comics. This is a 32 page b&w comic with full color covers and a cover price of $3.50 US.
